Background

There were three associations that worked on Ethiopia’s apiculture sector: the Ethiopian Board of Apiculture, the Ethiopian Society of Apiculture Science, and the Ethiopian Honey and Wax Producers and Exporters Association. Each of these associations had their own goals, objectives and mandates. While they were active, each of these organizations tried their best to meet their goals and objectives. Over time, nevertheless, they were unable to meet these objectives due to a lack of resources and cohesion.

Taking this into consideration, these association members in collaboration with other partners conducted deep assessments and made a decision to merge the aforementioned parties for the benefit of the sector and to the country at large.

The three associations unanimously agreed that the significance of merging is to leverage complementary strengths such as:

  • Greater operational efficiencies and reduced “back office” expenses,
  • Combine talent that fills gaps or drives innovation,
  • Economies of scale can be found in consolidating overlapping functions,
  • One unified, authoritative voice often resonates with funders, legislators, regulators and the industry as a whole,
  • A single group can help preserve and expand the volunteer pool, which is especially important when volunteer capacity is tight,
  • The elimination of multiple, competing memberships or participation options results in greater affordability — and more meaningful engagement — for stakeholders.

Due to the merging process, Ethiopian Apiculture Development Association (EADA) was formed on October 15, 2023 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It is a first class national organization with nationwide recognition with producers, academicians, exporters, Development Agents as it’s members and founders.

Purpose

The main purpose of reforming EADA is to strengthen the communication between the government and the apiculture industry, to increase apiculture production, bee product processing and trading, to promote the communication of the scientific and technological achievement, experience and market information in the bee industry, to promote international exchange and co-operation, and to prosper Ethiopian apiculture subsector.
